Amazing images in www.theatlantic.com show a dog jumping out of a helicopter in the recent Osama strike. The dog looks like a German Shepherd, which is one of the most commonly used breeds used by the US military. They can apparently run twice as fast as humans, foiling any attempts at escape by the enemy, not to mention their ability to “sniff out enemy troops from up to 3 km away”! I for one, certainly would not like to be on the wrong side of one of these pooches!
We also recently had our own Australian 9 year old Labrador, Sarbi, who was honoured with the RSPCA’s purple cross for service in Afghanistan.
When we remember those who fight for our country, let us not forget the often unsung heroes, the dogs who go along with their handlers, saving lives along the way through their extraordinary powers of smell, speed and intelligence.
Dogs are also true heroes in war situations. Where would we be without them?
