The wrinkly, loose-skinned Sphynx is a hairless cat that was developed from a hairless mutant in Canada, where a breeding program in the 1960s resulted in the distinctive Sphynx.

While the Sphynx has no whiskers or eyelashes, it isn’t completely hairless. This cat generally has a very fine down coat on its body, which feels somewhat like a warm peach. Not many people find this breed particularly attractive, but the Sphynx’s soft, warm, velvety body texture is one of its most appealing traits.

The Sphynx is a medium-sized cat weighing between 3.5 and 7 kg.  It comes in all colours and patterns, with their eyes, paw pads and nose leather matching the colour of their bodies.

The Sphynx is a lovable, playful cat with lots of energy. It enjoys human companionship and most get along fine with other cats as well as dogs although the Sphynx likes to be the centre of attention. This may not be the best cat for a family with children, but if you suffer from cat allergies, the hairless Sphynx may be a good choice.

This clever cat will find nice, warm spots in your home, whether that’s on your lap, your computer, or in your bed – under the covers.

The skin temperature of the Sphynx is higher than that of cats with normal coats, causing them to sweat. Because they don’t have hair to absorb their body oils, these cats need to be bathed or sponged regularly. Their large ears and long nails also need regular cleaning.

A properly bred Sphynx is a strong breed without specific health problems and a life expectancy of around 14 years.
