1. Play with your cat’s paws

Not only can playing with your cat’s paws be fun, but it’ll also make trimming their claws much easier. According to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), a cat should have its nail trimmed every ten days to two weeks. However, some cats refuse to have their nails clipped.

Playing with your cat’s paws when he or she is feeling calm will stop your cat from associating you touching their paws with nail trimming.

2. Choose a short, snappy name

You might think Mr Dobalina makes for a great cat name, but cats only tend to come when you call them by a short name. Make life easier by choosing a one-syllable name, like ‘Misty’, for example.

3. No more stinky litter

There’s nothing a cat owner loathes more than a smelly litter box. However, for those people that own more than one cat, stinky litter is often the reality. Sure, you can try changing to a different brand of litter and keeping it as clean as possible, but here’s a little tip… Sprinkle some green tea leaves or baking soda through the litter to help reduce the stink.

HINT: If you have more than one cat it’s recommended you have a litter box per cat. Not only will this help prevents accidents, but some cats hate sharing!

4. Cats love being up high

Cats love to be active, but they also adore being up high. This can be tricky when your cat is confined to your house or apartment. Give your cat a helping hand by building them a cat tree or hanging structure.

Don’t know where to start? There’s plenty of inspiration on the internet. Simply search ‘cat tree’ or ‘cat climbers’ and you’ll find some amazing imagery and even DIY plans. What are you waiting for? Go get creative and you’ll be known as the best cat owner on the block!

5. Sort out your cat insurance

Many cat owners fall into the trap of thinking cat insurance is an unnecessary expense – until they actually wish they had it. It can be useful to weigh up all the potential costs a cat owner can accrue when a cat gets sick or injured and compare this to the cost of a monthly insurance plan. You might be surprised by how affordable the extra peace of mind can be.

6. Keep a roll of foil handy

No, not to roll into a ball, as a lay toy for your cat! Aluminium foil is a handy tool for keeping your cat off out-of-bounds-surfaces. For example, when you want to keep your purr pal from jumping on the kitchen bench or the side of your baby’s cot. Simply, place some foil down and your mischievous mog won’t jump onto the surface anymore. Why? It’s simple…cats hate the sound of the foil under their paws.

7. Safeguard your sofa

Don’t wait until your furniture gets scratched to bits before taking action. As soon as you decide to adopt or buy a cat – go get a scratching post. An alternative option is to cover your sofa in cardboard. Don’t worry, this isn’t forever – just until your cat realises it can’t scratch it and stops trying.

These are just a few of the many life hacks that make life as a cat owner a little easier. If you have a useful tip to share, post in the comments section below.
